I'm Glad You Asked!
Yes, I know that they say, “I’m wild and wooly and full of fleas; ain’t ever been curried below the knees….” I know I’m a little untamed. Every now and then a fella, or a gal, sides up to me and curiously asks, "How'd you ever come to be a cowboy and a preacher?” I’m not surprised at the question, since that is a rather unusual combination, so I don’t mind answering; in fact, I’m glad you asked.
You see, my father, “Nevada Steve,” was a working cowboy on the 16,000 acre Rafter “L” Ranch in Baker, Nevada. The land of his youth earned him the nickname “Nevada” which he wore all of his life. Because of his cowboy skills, he later hired on as an “extra” and stunt man in the old-time western movies. In time, he graduated to professional status as a championship rodeo cowboy and performer. Dad was one of the last of the “old time” cowboys. To answer your question, I grew up in that environment and on the back of a horse. As a boy, together with my brother and sister, we performed and shared the rodeo arena with my dad as we traveled across the country. What an adventure! What unequaled experiences and events. As children, we enjoyed rubbing shoulders with some of the great rodeo and performing cowboys of that day. What memories - never to be forgotten!
However, when I was yet a teenager, the greatest of all life-changing experiences came when my dad was wonderfully and forever changed by hearing the gospel of God’s grace and became a Christian. The impact of that was like a bolt of blinding, white lightening that touched every member of our family. Dad was never the same again. Oh, he was forever a cowboy and a horseman, but the focus of his life changed. It was so dramatic that everyone who came in contact with him knew he was a Christian. Dad became a missionary on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona for the last 30 years of his life. To learn more of this story, you may go to the “Nevada Steve Page” and read more about my dad or go to the “Buckaroo Book, Bible and Gift Page” where you will find Dad’s short biography for sale – “From Sunup to Sundown.”
As a boy I wanted nothing more than the wide open spaces, the adventure and freedom of a cowboy’s life. But, I could never escape the reality of dad’s conversion or the power of God. The truth of the gospel captured my heart and soon after, the call of God on my life to preach the gospel came.
At the age of 18, I began preaching on the street corners of Denver, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona while I was a student in Bible College. I am 75 years old now and have never, ever wanted to be anything but a preacher of the gospel. I have been a pastor in churches in Arizona, California, Indiana and Ohio; founded a Christian School; a publication ministry - BDTLB Inc.; conducted itinerant evangelistic crusades, cowboy schools, and civic and church programs.
Now that I’m a senior citizen and in my “second childhood,” God has allowed me to devote more time to writing and playing cowboys. I now conduct cowboy camps (Michigan, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kentucky, and South Dakota); a Colorado Trail Ride, Cowboy Reunion, Trick-Roping School, local church evangelistic meetings and this website in hopes of leading someone to drink of the “water of life.” If I can help someone find Christ, then I will feel that I have not lived my life in vain.
I’m glad you asked!
